Der Tagungsband möchte das interdisziplinäre Gespräch zwischen Sprach- und Rechtswissenschaft ein weiteres Mal und vor dem Hintergrund aktueller gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen anregen. Die hierfür ausgewählten Themen werden sowohl aus linguistischer wie aus juristischer Perspektive, d.h. von Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern sowie von Juristinnen und Juristen beleuchtet: Verhältnis von Sprache, Recht, Öffentlichkeit und Politik, Kommunikation vor Gericht, eine z.T. sprach- bzw. rechtsphilosophische Sicht auf rechtsrelevante Äußerungen, Fragen der Auslegung insbesondere angesichts der verzweigten Intertextualität des Rechts, historische und aktuelle (auf die europäische Einigung zurückzuführende) Wandlungen von Rechts- und Sprachsystemen, der Nutzen der Linguistik für die Kriminologie sowie Ursachen und Lösungen für die Schwerverständlichkeit von Gesetzen. This volume presents a collection of contributions by linguists and lawyers on topical questions of the interconnections between language and law, and opens up a wide range of theoretical, methodological and practical approaches to aspects such as politics and the public domain, court proceedings, criminology, the editing of legislation, legal training, and the Europeanisation of law.

Methods in Pragmatics provides a systematic overview of the different types of data, the different methods of data collection and data analysis used in pragmatic research. It offers authoritative and comprehensive surveys of the entire breadth of methods and methodologies. Part 1 covers introspectional, philosophical and cognitive pragmatics. Part 2 is devoted to experimental pragmatics, including discourse completion and dialogue construction tasks, role-plays and other production and comprehension tasks. Part 3 reviews observational pragmatics including ethnographic and discourse analytic methods, and part 4, finally, is devoted to corpus pragmatics including accounts of corpus compilation, annotation and data retrieval specific to pragmatic research. Linguists have typically studied language change at the aggregate level of speech communities, yet key mechanisms of change such as analogy and automation operate within the minds of individual language users. Drawing on lifespan data from 50 authors and the intriguing case of the special passives in the history of English, this study addresses three fundamental issues relating to individuality in language change: (i) how variation and change at the individual level interact with change at the community level; (ii) how much innovation and change is possible across the adult lifespan; (iii) and to what extent related linguistic patterns are associated in individual cognition. As one of the first large-scale empirical studies to systematically link individual- and community-based perspectives in language change, this volume breaks new ground in our understanding of language as a complex adaptive system.
